Background
Ovarian cancer remains the deadliest gynecologic malignancy and its pathogenesis is unknown because of the lack of tumor progression model. Despite substantial response, most women with ovarian cancer are destined to additional chemotherapy. Therefore immunotherapy is needed for alternative treatment modalities and the identification of tumor antigen is required for that. Severeal cancer-testis antigen genes or gene families have been isolated to date, including MAGE, GAGE, and SSX. This study attempted to investigate the possibility of immunotherapy of ovarian cancer and to explore the prevalence of expression of MAGE and SSX with analysis of histologic types of ovarian diseases.
